Strange Angels: Young Adult Fantasy For All Readers by Sierra Moore
As if normal teenage problems weren't enough, try being a sixteen-year-old with an unlikely gift for sensing dangerous, inhuman creatures. Dru Anderson is "blessed" with this gift, and she and her father work together to hunt down zombies, werewolves, and other supernatural beings of the night.
Moving from town to town, the two become adept at discovering the hiding places of a wide variety of soul-sucking creatures. Strange Angels opens with Dru and her dad arriving in a small Dakota town to continue their relentless hunt. However one night Dru's father returns home after being turned into a zombie and she's forced to strike him down.
Unfortunately the same zombies that targeted her father are now after Dru, and she escapes into a dark, stormy Dakota night with only the clothes on her back. Not knowing where to turn, she winds up at a long-beloved adolescent haven, the local mall, to puzzle out her next move.
The hunter is now being hunted, and Dru's time is clearly running out. But fate arrives in the form of a geeky Goth high school classmate named Graves, who offers his help before getting attacked by a werewolf himself. Riddled with guilt, Dru feels responsible for the attack. The two are now bound together to figure out who (or what) is on her trail.
Another interesting character soon enters the mix; a hunter named Christophe who confirms Dru's fear that the zombies will stop at nothing to kill her. But Christophe raises more questions than he answers. He may or may not be human and Dru is not certain he has her best interests at heart. Is her past, and that of her father's, really what she believes it to be? Can Dru use her gifts to save Grave's life, as well as her own?
Lili St. Crow uses the stark backdrop of wintertime in the Dakotas to her full advantage in this tale. The frightening blizzards become yet another creature for Dru to battle, and contribute to the suspenseful air of the story.
The common themes of adolescent angst and confusion will bring back memories to every reader, regardless of age. Dru is a lovable, if not quite average, teenage heroine in a fast-paced tale that bodes well for future books in the series. Although clearly written for the young adult market, this book has as much crossover potential as some of the more popular urban fantasy books available. Strange Angels is a solid contender into the young adult fantasy genre.
