Five Reasons to Check Out Flight of the Conchords on Satellite TV in California by Thomas Masterson
Looking over the history of dramatic series on HBO, you are going to see a number of winners. The Sopranos was more than a series for the network; it was a pop culture phenomenon. In the same way Scorsese's Goodfellas could be heard spoken line-for-line all over California, The Sopranos was on the tip of many tongues across the world. In fact, The Sopranos was in many ways an extension of that film, coming through week and after week on satellite TV in high definition.
HBO made some brilliant moves over the years, above all never being content to stand still with programming. After all, that was what made the network a sensation in the first place. Big Love, the tale of a Mormon love triangle, took even more chances than its predecessors. Just when you thought the network had its best days, it released Flight of the Conchords, a tale of two struggling New Zealand musicians and their life in New York. Artists trying to make it in New York or California doesn't sound like new material. But what if those people didn't seem like they were acting at all? What if they were really Brett and Jermaine and had the music to back it up? Here are five reasons to check out Flight on satellite TV.
1. It's probably the funniest show on TV. To call the humor self-deprecating would be an understatement. No one humiliates themselves more than this pair. You don't feel sorry for them, though, for they seem to be comfortable with the whole thing, as if it was a part of them forever.
2. Their manager is too good to be true. Of all the characters, Murray the band manager may have been the writers' finest achievement. Murray is not exactly hip, but he tries his best to make the band a household name, from his office inside the New Zealand Embassy.
3. The music is actually very good. The music may poke fun at the characters and offer commentary on the events of the show, but it's awfully well-written besides. The duo has been known to sell out concert halls all over the country when they're not getting everyone to dial them up on satellite TV when their show is airing.
4. The cameo appearances will grab your attention. In the early days of the show, you might see an occasional guest appearance by a Saturday Night Live character or an actor from the comedy circuit. These days, you're bound to see A-list stars whenever you tune in the show. Among the memorable cameos was John Turturro as a hardboiled cop.
5. It straddles the clever and intelligent line well. You won't find a show with more clever moments on satellite TV, but it doesn't revolve around clever. Plenty of silly moments add a nice balance.
