A person first walking into a figure drawing class may find the experience to be out of the ordinary. What he or she will see will be a man or a woman naked in a pose with many artists standing around and drawing. This class is an essential part of the foundation in an artist's study and can be an exciting and informative elective for someone who isn't required to take it. Many skills are developed in this course that inform the breadth of an artist's work and can transform the way a person sees the world in his or her day-to-day life.
The materials used in a figure drawing course vary greatly, but are usually transportable since students will be traveling to class. Students may not have more than three hours for a class period, so drawing materials may be limited to charcoal or pencil, things that are dry and can be transported, though occasionally paint may be the medium in use.
There are a variety of potential surfaces to work on as well. Since students will be traveling to and from class, the portability of the drawing surface should be considered. Professors vary from program to program; a certain professor may require a specific surface, where another will encourage you to experiment. If a student is unable to store drawings or paintings in the classroom or studio, then working with oil paint will be much more impractical than working with pencil.
Students will observe that being a figure model is often challenging, since it requires a level of bravery and also physical strength, since poses are held for up to several hours. Shorter poses are often used as exercises or warm-ups, while longer poses lead to a more developed piece of art work.
Throughout a semester of a figure drawing course, students will see many different models with all body types. Students will learn how to draw a variety of different bodies from various angles and will develop the ability to become skilled in drawing the structure of the human body as well as practice foreshortening and even working with a shifting model, as sometimes the models will move slightly throughout a longer drawing.
Sometimes, students are apprehensive to draw a naked model, but it is important to remember that the models are professional and that your instructors are experienced in this department as well. Boundaries of everyone in the room should always be respected, for example, the poses should be in good taste, and the model should not be touched during the class. It is not uncommon for the model to do very little or no talking while in the room.
Showing up to class on time will benefit the student because this class is all about what happens during the session and not about homework. The model's time is valuable, and so is yours, so be punctual. Figure drawing is an important part of developing as an artist and can be a challenging opportunity for growth. Patience with yourself is necessary to allow improvement.
For art majors, figure drawing online classes are mandatory, though they can also be taken as an elective. Anyone taking a figure drawing class will gain a valuable new perspective and work to cultivate personal characteristics that would otherwise remain dormant.
